Mon, 27 Jul 2009 07:54:51 -0700 Hail TRAI – Only 2 mbps speeds can be defined as Broadband | Growth, India, internet, technology http://weboxy.posterous.com/hail-trai-only-2-mbps-speeds-can-be-defined-a http://weboxy.posterous.com/hail-trai-only-2-mbps-speeds-can-be-defined-a

Hail TRAI – Only 2 mbps speeds can be defined as Broadband

by Arun Prabhudesai · 1 comment

Now this is really a scintillating news ! 2 years back TRAI had mentioned that only speeds of above 256 kbps can be defined as a broadband connection, but now TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) today indicated that :

Government has to redefine broadband services making it mandatory for operators to offer at least 2Mbps speed.

Indian Broadband Connection speed

While the Western, especially European countries are introducing speeds of 20 mbps and above, India is lagging far far behind, specifically due to their speeds.

If this new definition comes to passé, it may actually change the face of Indian Internet scene.

This is offcourse a great news for consumers, but it will also push the operators to offer that kind of speeds to its consumers, failing so they will not be given subsidies for offering broadband connections. So operators will have no choice but to offer it.

From consumers point of view, it will really help the Internet penetration in India. One of the main reasons why Internet does not grow in India is because of pathetic speeds.

Except for checking mails and browsing non-heavy sites is what one can do satisfactorily (sometimes not even that). but with speeds of 2mbps, one can stream multimedia content with ease, Download heavy files etc etc, due to which there will be added incentive to users to come online.

There are lot of innovative ideas (specifically for India) that could be implemented on Internet with increased broadband speeds e.g: Online Interactive Learning.

Now there is a flip side as well – Even if the definition of broadband is changed, the Operator may not be in the position to offer it to Indian consumers, they may have to incur heavy amounts of money to upgrade their networks. Secondly, if the speed goes up, so will the costs – Will Indian consumer afford paying that kind of money.

yes, there are questions to be answered and solutions to be found. But I can say with confidence that TRAI is heading the right direction, and it needs bold decisions like these to improve the much needed Internet penetration in India

Wed, 22 Jul 2009 21:51:47 -0700 Now, withdraw cash at shops #India http://weboxy.posterous.com/now-withdraw-cash-at-shops-india http://weboxy.posterous.com/now-withdraw-cash-at-shops-india

Automated teller machines have put an end to long queues at bank tellers' windows. Now, long queues outside ATMs may also wither away.

The Reserve Bank of India has allowed withdrawal of cash from point-of-sale terminals, where customers swipe their credit or debit cards to pay for purchases. Noting that the use of debit cards has been steadily increasing, an RBI circular today said withdrawal of cash up to Rs 1,000 per day through debit cards issued in India was now being permitted.

At present, customers are only allowed to withdraw cash at ATMs. There are currently 44,857 ATMs in the country, while the number of PoS terminals at 4,70,237 is over 10 times higher.

RBI said customers could use the cash withdrawal facility at merchant establishments irrespective of whether they make a purchase or not. "This facility may be made available at any merchant establishment designated by the bank after a process of due diligence," the circular said.

Bankers have responded enthusiastically to the RBI circular saying it was a means of promoting financial inclusion. "It is a customer-centric step. Now customers will have many points for withdrawing cash," said R P Sinha, deputy managing director for information technology at State Bank of India [ Get Quote ].

"It is a good step as PoS terminals are much more easily available than ATMs," aid Aspy Engineer, vice-president for alternative channels at private sector Axis Bank.

However, bankers admitted that providing this facility would present logistical challenges for banks.

The circular is silent on the issue of withdrawal charges and whether this will be borne by the bank or the customer. There is also no mention of a timeframe for implementing this step.

An RBI official said banks would have to take a decision on service charges and whether they would pick up the tab or pass it on to customers. While no date was fixed for starting this facility, it would depend on bank managements in taking their board's approval and firm up the mechanism, the official added.

Wed, 01 Jul 2009 21:19:46 -0700 Credit card will stop working online unless you register with your bank before Augest 1st http://weboxy.posterous.com/credit-card-will-stop-working-online-unless-y http://weboxy.posterous.com/credit-card-will-stop-working-online-unless-y
Secure-_new_-725x179

Making Online Shopping Safer

To make online shopping safer, the RBI has made it mandatory, from 1st August onwards, for all online transactions to have an extra level of authentication. The ‘extra’ level, is a password that you will have to enter after entering your credit/debit card details while making online payments. This new technology is called VBV – Verified by Visa or MSC – MasterCard SecureCode

How do I get this ‘extra password’?

All you have to do is log on to your bank’s website, register your card for Verified by Visa (or MasterCard SecureCode) and get your password. Each bank has its own process for card registration. So, hop on to your bank’s website and register now:

HDFC Bank ICICI Bank Citibank HSBC Bank
Standard Chartered State Bank of India Axis Bank ABN Amro
Deutsche Bank Karur Vysya Bank

Okay, so I’m registered with VBV/MSC. Now what?

Great! Now, every time you book on Cleartrip, after entering your card details on the payment step, you will be redirected to your bank’s website. You will need to enter your VBV/MSC password there after which you will be redirected back to Cleartrip for completing the booking process. That’s it!

What about American Express cards?

For Amex cards the ‘extra level of authentication’ will work slightly differently. On the payment step at Cleartrip, you will be asked to enter you billing address, which will be passed on to the bank. This will be checked against your billing address the bank has on its records. If the addresses don’t match your payment will be rejected. This technology is called AVS – Address Verification System. Please check your credit card statement if you don’t remember your exact billing address.
